Chinese Hand Ball
Description: The idea of the game is to hit someone below the knee with the ball. You are not allowed to pick up the ball, only to hit it with your hand. Once you have touched it once, someone else must touch it before you can hit it again. If the ball goes above waist height and someone catches it, the person who knocked the ball up is out. You are not allowed to ‘drag’ the ball or to pick it up. You are out if you touch the ball twice in a row also. No kneeling on the floor is allowed.

Variations: Various number of lives | Play in teams | Play with more than one ball

Basketball
Equipment: Ball, Chairs, Hoops if available

Description: Play in two teams. Each team has one member standing on a chair to be the ‘basket’. The team has to try to throw the ball to the ‘basket’ who is allowed to try to catch the ball. You cannot run with the ball. You may dribble the ball by bouncing it with one hand on the floor. As soon as you stop dribbling you must stand still and pass the ball. No contact is allowed between players, only for the ball or a foul will be given. A point is scored for each ‘basket’. When the point is scored, the ‘basket’ hands it to the opposing team so they can clear the ball.

Variations:

Spud
Equipment: Ball

Description: Each player is assigned a number. One player throws a ball as high as they can and calls out a number. The player whose number is called catches the ball as the rest of the players run away as fast as possible. Once the called player catches the ball, they call “Spud!” at which time all retreating players are to stop dead in their tracks. The player with the ball then attempts to hit another player with the ball. The other players are still not allowed to move. If a player is hit they get to retrieve the ball while the rest of the players move away. The player who was hit is also given a “spud,” or a point. If the player is missed, the throwing player chases after the ball and gets a spud. Once the ball is retrieved, the game begins again, with the number called and the ball thrown. The player with the least number of spuds at the end of the game wins

Variations: The player with the ball is allowed to take three long steps so that he can get as close to the nearest player as possible | The scout being shot at is allowed to twist and bend, but may not move his feet | A player is not given a spud, but a letter (s, p, u or d). When they have the full set of letters they must stand against the wall while the other players line up to throw the ball at them. If any player misses they must stand against the wall as well

Thief!
Equipment: An 'object'

Description: The players sit in a circle with one person blindfolded in the middle. An object is placed under the middle chair (or by the middle person). The blindfolded person has a limited number of ‘points’ to use (e.g. 10). In silence, a selected thief has to quietly make his way round the circle and then attempt to steal the object. If the blindfolded person manages to ‘point’ him out (directly point at him) he is caught and play restarts. If he manages to steal the object he swaps places with the person in the middle.

Notes: Absolute silence is required for this game to work properly.

Death
Equipment: Ball

Description: The players move around the hall trying to avoid the ball. They are allowed to pick up the ball once it has stopped moving, and then throw it. If the ball hits any part of your body you are unable to use that part (e.g. hits arm - put arm behind the back, legs - must crawl around). If the ball touches your head you have been killed and you must sit out the game. Play continues until a time limit or until last player is left

Capture the Flag
Equipment: 2 Flags (or Lanterns)

Description: The players are divided into two even teams. Boundaries for the game are set out in a large rectangle or square. A line is drawn through the middle of the playing zone to divide the two teams. Each team then choose where they want their flag and jail but they have to show the other team where they are and both teams have to agree on the placement of the flags and jails. Once this is done, each team goes to their own side of the playing field. When the game begins, the teams are free to go at the others flag. If a team member is caught on the other teams side, (To be caught you must be “tagged” by a player on the opposite side on his own territory), he will be sent to jail. This player must sit in jail until either the game ends or he is freed by a member of his own team. To be freed, you have to be touched by a “free” member of his own team. The freed player gets a free walk to his own side of the playing field. The person freeing the player is on his own, he may still be tagged and put in jail. To win the game you must capture the other teams flag and return it to your own side with out being captured

Notes: For small teams, instead of a jail, create a ‘Check Point Charlie’ at the centreline. Captured prisoners can then be exchanged

Variations: For a night game, use lanterns to mark the centre line, while two lanterns are used to show the approximate area of the team flags | Flag guards must remain at least 5 metres from their flag | Flag must be completely exposed.
